Pakistan's Umar Gul (right) is all smiles after hitting the winning run.

Pakistan made hard work of it before snapping Australia's record 13-Test winning streak against them in a three-wicket victory at Headingley today.Needing just 40 runs with seven wickets in hand to complete the win on Saturday morning, Pakistan lost four wickets before Umar Gul (1 not out) hit Mitchell Johnson through the covers for the winning run.Gul leapt in the air in celebration and the local Pakistani population rejoiced in the stands with Mohammad Aamer (5 not out) the other unbeaten batsman.

Australia had their chances to press for another great escape with Shane Watson dropping Imran Farhat (67) on four and Michael Clarke grassing Shoaib Malik (10) when he was also on four.It was Pakistan's first Test win over Australia since November 1995 in Sydney and levelled the two-match series at 1-1.

Their most recent performance in the Harbour City was the one the Australians were hoping would play on their minds in pursuit of a modest victory target on a good batting pitch in Leeds.

Australia trailed by 206 runs after the first innings in Sydney but turned things around for a miraculous win.And there were signs of the wheels coming off today as Pakistan lost 5-24 in 77 balls. After knocking back an extra hour of play in the Yorkshire sunshine on Friday evening, Azhar Ali (51) and Umar Akmal (8) had to sleep on the prospect of being so close to an historic victory.

No side had won a Test match for 103 years after scoring a total of less than 100 in the first innings and not even Ricky Ponting's bunch of miracle workers could change that stat. The result capped a forgettable tour of the United Kingdom for Australia.

They lost the one-day series against England 3-2, the Twenty20 series against Pakistan 2-0 and drew the Test series.
