Ontario Cricket Association Initiates Legal Action against Cricket Canada
July 30, 2010, 11:31 am
On Monday July 26 the Cricket players and viewers were expecting a great start to the National Championships being held in Ontario. The first match was scheduled between Prairies and Ontario. We had learned from our sources that there were 2 teams being fielded for Ontario.

The venue for the Inaugural match was changed from Malton Cricket club leaving many disappointed. The story didn’t end as Ontario Cricket Association after an emergency meeting Initiated Legal Action against Cricket Canada.

The Ontario Cricket Association (OCA) informed us that they have instructed their solicitors to initiate legal action against Cricket Canada (CC). Among the reasons alleged by Ontario Cricket Association (OCA), the most prominent included a range of issues that OCA is entitled to as fully paid up member of CC. They allegedthe following issues:

 1. Team Selection for the currently on going National Championships.

OCA the representative member of CC from Ontario was not allowed to enter its team into the currently on going National Championships being held in Ontario. As a fully paid up member in good standing, the OCA, like other provincial associations, has the privilege of entering its team in the National Championships. The denial of this privilege has further accentuated reputational and cricket development challenges posed by CC and the conduct of its executives, to cricket in Ontario.

 2. Sponsorship Issues:

By virtue of its membership of CC, the OCA continues to suffer financially due to the conduct of CC executives pertaining to the recent departure of CC's national sponsor Scotiabank.

 3. Obstruction of Cricket development Programs:

The OCA cricket development programs have been routinely obstructed by CC in the province of Ontario. This includes routine bypassing of OCA in ALL matters ranging from hosting tournaments in Ontario, appointing a selector, negotiations with potential sponsors for various programs ranging from schools to international cricket.

OCA further informed that these matters have been communicated on multiple occasions in the course of personal meetings and in writing. The performance of CC in EVERY arena is testament to its growing unprofessional conduct. With approx. 30 international matches having been lost in the calendar year 2010, loss of major corporate sponsor with no prospect on the horizon, considering approx. 80 percent of cricket is played in Ontario, the biggest impact of the CC's behaviour is being felt in Ontario.

The OCA at this point is left with NO OPTION and based on a resolution of its Board of Directors, is regretably having to initiate legal action against Cricket Canada.

Calls to Cricket Canada President Ranjit Saini were not answered. The ICC Cricket World Cup is just months away and the Canadian Cricket has more questions than answers.

Midweek newspaper will keep you updated on all the developments and we would request all concerned parties who want better future for Cricket to send us your feedback.
